Most people start off on their weight loss journey focusing on changing their nutrition and exercise routines.
They start off full of motivation and make great progress until one day they slip up.
They eventually end up going back to their old habits and beat themselves up for not having the willpower to be able to stick to their diet.
Well, I’m here to tell you, you aren’t alone. With over 95% of diets failing in the long term it’s a common scenario.
So what can you do to change this pattern?
What I believe is the missing link from most weight loss programs is mindset work.
If you don’t work on your mindset before you start your weight loss journey then you are probably in that 95% of people who are going to fail.
So to change that and to increase your chances of success grab a piece of paper and sit down to answer the following 3 questions.
What do I want?
Do you know exactly what you want to achieve? What is it you want for your health and fitness? Be as specific as possible with your answers.
Go ahead and grab a piece of paper, set the timer for 5 minutes and write down all the things that you want to achieve.
Why do I want it?
I’m sure there are a multitude of reasons why you want to lose weight. Such as to feel healthier, to have more energy to play with the kids and to feel more confident. However chances are you haven’t sat down and written a list of all the reasons why.
Writing your reasons why you want to lose weight down is a powerful exercise because you’re likely to reveal a compelling reason as to why you really want to loss weight which acts as a powerful motivational tool. Plus having a list of all the reasons why you want to lose weight in one spot which you can read over and over again is a great motivational reminder whenever you need a motivational pick me up.
So grab a piece of paper, set the timer for 5 minutes and start writing.
When do I want it?
It’s important to set a realistic timeframe of when you want to achieve a particular goal so you have something to work towards and to keep you motivated to stay on track.
I like to set my clients 3 month goals as I find that a perfect timeframe because it’s long enough to see significant change but it’s not too long for them to lose motivation.
So grab a pen and paper and ask yourself where you would like to be in 3 months time. While this can be weight related I also like to set goals around exercise, nutrition and any other areas of my clients life that they would like to see change occur.
It’s also important to make sure that you then break these goals down into weekly actionable items to ensure you are making progress and keep motivated on your journey.
The more energy and time you put into doing these exercises the more you will see results and have success on your weight loss journey.
So go ahead and get writing!
