Imagine a life where you can eat whatever you like whenever you like and not worry about putting on weight and in many cases even lose weight!
I know to most woman that sounds like utopia. Some place they dream of getting to but don’t believe they will ever experience.
Well I want you to know that it is possible. If I can get there after over a decade of dieting and food obsession you can too.
The truth is our bodies instinctively know what we should be eating and in what amount. When we start to listen to our bodies, our bodies change both physically and emotionally. We stop obsessing about food, we stop over eating and we settle at a weight our bodies are happy at. It’s that simple.
Unfortunately for so long we’ve been taught to believe that the only way to lose weight is by going on a diet. A plan that tells us what to eat and when to eat. We’ve stopped listening to our bodies and our hunger signals and we’ve lost track of how to eat normally.
The truth is diets don’t work. If they did, obesity wouldn’t be at an all time record high and there wouldn’t be more and more diets coming out on the market place every day. All of which promise to help you lose the weight quickly and effortlessly which of course is what everyone wants.
Research however shows that the majority of people that go on a diet even if they lose weight initially, will eventually gain the weight back, plus more.
So what’s the solution?
The first step to be able to get back in touch with your body’s instincts is to commit to eating mindfully.
That means being present when you are eating. Giving your food your full attention and focusing on the way the food tastes, smells, looks and how it makes you feel.
It means shifting your focus from what you are eating and how many calories you are eating to what your body feels like eating and how that food makes your body feel.
To eat mindfully simply start by following these simple steps…
- Sit down to eat.
- Eat without distractions like the TV on or in front of the computer.
- Chew your food slowly and thoroughly.
- Savour and enjoy each mouthful.
- Put your fork down between mouthfuls.
- Focus on the food. How it tastes, looks, smells and how it makes you feel.
- Tune in to your body and check in with how hungry you are throughout the meal.
So go forth and have that cake! Just remember to eat it mindfully and you may be surprised to find you don’t even feel like the whole piece or you don’t enjoy it as much as you thought you would.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on how you went so feel free to leave me a comment below on any insights you’ve had from eating more mindfully.
